What is PrEP?

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a powerful, FDA-approved medication that helps prevent HIV before exposure—think of it as birth control, but for HIV. PrEP is a safe and effective option for people who want to take control of their sexual health.

PrEP is available in two forms:

  • A daily pill

  • A long-acting injection (every two months)

Both are highly effective when taken as prescribed. The pill is taken once a day, while the injectable form is administered by a healthcare provider every two months. A provider can help you decide which option is best for your lifestyle and needs.

It takes a few weeks after starting PrEP to reach full protection. To stay protected, it’s important to continue using PrEP consistently. You’ll also need to visit your healthcare provider every few months for routine HIV and health screenings.

Some people choose to use PrEP “on demand,” also known as PrEP 2-1-1, where doses are taken in advance of sex. If you're interested in this option, your provider or PrEP Navigator can walk you through the CDC’s guidelines.

Cost and Coverage

Most people pay little or nothing for PrEP. By law, nearly all insurance plans must cover the daily oral pill and related doctor visits at no cost to you. If you're uninsured or need help with coverage, there are financial assistance programs available.

While coverage for injectable PrEP isn’t required by all insurers, support programs may still help you access it. Our PrEP Navigators at MHC are here to guide you through your options and get you started with the best protection for your health.

Stand Together: MHC and the Fight Against HIV

At Minority Health Consortium (MHC), we believe in community, compassion, and care. In the ongoing fight against HIV, we proudly stand side-by-side with the community, not just to prevent new infections, but to uplift and support those who are living and thriving with HIV every single day.

One of the powerful tools in our prevention toolkit is PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is a medication that, when taken as prescribed, is over 99% effective at preventing HIV. It’s available as a daily pill or a long-acting injectable, giving individuals more control over how they protect themselves. MHC offers free and confidential PrEP navigation services to help people understand their options, get tested, and access the care they need without judgment or stigma.

But our work doesn’t stop at prevention. MHC is deeply committed to supporting those who are living with HIV, through care coordination, support groups, education, psychosocial services, and access to vital resources. We understand that HIV is not just a medical condition; it’s a social and emotional journey. That’s why our team is here to walk alongside every individual, celebrating resilience, promoting health, and fighting for equity.

HIV is not a life sentence; it's a call for stronger community. At MHC, we answer that call every day, together with you.

Let’s continue the fight, hand in hand. Prevention. Support. Empowerment. That’s the MHC way.
